‘Feels cool, huh?’: What Chinese astronauts said to each other on Shenzhou-11 space mission

NEW DELHI: What would you say if you left the Earth’s atmosphere and saw space for the first time? Chinese astronaut Chen Dong, who took off on China’s historic Shenzhou-11 mission+ , was so lost in the experience that his commander had to repeat himself before Cheng responded.

Parts of the small talk between the two taikonauts (term for Chinese astronauts, like cosmonaut for Russians) has been released. A snippet of this, released by Chinese government news agency Xinhua shows first-timer Chen engrossed in the experience, as the fairing on the craft came off and he saw space for the first time.

His commander, Jing Haipeng, who is on his third trip to space, perhaps now used to the awe that Chen was feeling, played it cool.

Here is the conversation between the two taikonauts as Cheng caught his first glimpse of space:

Chen Dong: Wow, spectacular!

Jing Haipeng: Feels cool, huh?

Chen: Absolutely beautiful!

Jing: I mean, is it cool?

Chen: OH, yes, definitely cool!
