2016-05-03 16:20:22
So Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbll has announced that the next generation of Australian submarines will be built by French firm DCNS.
The big political story is that this announcement will help secure the Government a number of South Australian seats in the upcoming election. The big strategic story is not so much who won this bid but who lost it: Japan. The Interpreter has debated exhaustively the strategic implications of this decision: would a sub deal with Mitsubishi Heavy Industry bring us closer to Japan? Would we form a quasi-alliance that might entangle us in Japan’s increasingly fractious relationship with China? What does that mean for our China-exposed trading industry.

Agree that this is not a "win" for China, but this is a setback for Abe Shinzo and his administration. Glad that our Aussie friends made a choice on its own terms and not because of lobbying from us and the Japanese. Japan needs to play this diplomatically, and not as rejected suitor, full of resentments.

As for military exports, Japan is yet a newcomer whose learning curve will be sharpened over time :) Demands for Soryu-type won't be diminished.
In fact, the latest bid had been debated within the Japanese government; defense officials did not want to transfer high tech info overseas without enough security backup.

See April 26 Yomiuri article headline "Lost Australian sub contract a blow to Japan / Abe viewed joint development as key to boosting bilateral ties".
Gen Nakatani, Japanese Defense Minister, is also quoted as determined to find out the reasons for the Aussie decision.
This was a blow, in large part because the Japanese went from "first to worst" after lots of lobbying from Abe himself with us weighing in also.

Aussies are smart. They don't want to be mistaken as Japanese subs when they enters the waters of SCS and ECS to do reconnaissance for US. The only reason they didn't pick German's subs is similarly they don't want to associate with the South Korean's subs either.

Good move by Australia no need to upset the China. Better off buying lesser submarines from France.

CCP Infiltrators are doing a number on the Aussie's Today . Demonstrations by Chinese Immigrants on the South China Sea Issue is " Clear Proof " of this . By 2030 , They will be calling the shots in Australia ..... . Being able to push Australia's ability to Defend Itself back Decades is Only the Beginning .... .

The entry of French defense tech into Asia-Pacific will realize the plurality of security arrangements to which China will have more difficulty responding. China needs to deal with several submarine types simultaneously which will make its maritime ambitions harder to materialize.

Why do you feel that an arms deal indicates a military alliance? South Korea buys arms from all over the world: tanks from Germany, planes from the US, and helicopters from Russia. Yet its only military alliance is with the US.
